Chen Jie’s Bio

Chen Jie is the photojournalist with the most awards and the most influential reporting in China. He is the chief reporter of the Beijing News Newspaper based in Beijing, the member of China Photographers Association, the master's tutor of Communication University of Zhejiang, the initiator of "Yueer Pixel" public welfare program, and co-initiator of Aurora Vision.
He is also the winner of the Golden Image Award, the highest photography award in China, and World Press Photo award. He is the Leica camera ambassador, Sony camera ambassador, DJI ambassador and Tencent public welfare ambassador.
The Tengger Desert pollution incident reported in September 2014 was authorized by the Chinese State Council for three times, touching off an environmental storm in China.
In May, 2016, he exclusively reported the situation of children climbing up the ladder on the cliff to go to school in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province, which attracted the attention of the General Secretary and the Premier of China, and led to high-level adjustments to the precise poverty alleviation strategy in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, which led to drastic changes, thanks to the efforts of the governments and all sectors of the society.
Since 2014, when he resigned as the director of photography department to return to the front line, he has had more than 30 reports involving ecological environment and poverty research, which were approved by the top leaders in China, 15 of which were supervised by the State Council to push for changes.
In 2016, he won the third prize in the General News category of the World Press Photo Contest. In 2018, he won the Golden Image Award, the highest award in photography in China, he has also won the China News Award for five times, the Golden Lens Outstanding Journalist of the Year for two times, the Gold Medal of the Asian News Award, the Gold Medal of the China International Press Photo Contest, and many others. 
He is the author of the book From Spectator to Intervention, Out of the Cliff Village, and Remote Villages in Transition, etc.
At present, he mainly focuses on image investigation reports in the fields of rural revitalization, ecological environment, and public welfare, and is good at the fusion media communication of photography, video, and investigation text.
In addition to his successful journalism career, he is actively involved in imparting knowledge to the younger generation of photographers through workshops, lectures, and providing funds and internship opportunities.

Work Experience:

2005 -2014: Works for Reuters as a freelance photographer under the name Joe Chan. In 2008 Beijing Olympics, he participated in the Beijing Olympics as a Reuters reporter and sent more than 500 articles, which made him one of the top reporters in the Beijing Olympics among all the reporters sent by Reuters.


From January 1997 to September 2003, worked as a photojournalist for Luoyang Daily in Luoyang City, China.

From September 2003 to May 2005, worked as a photojournalist for the Beijing News Newspaper in Beijing, China. 

June 2005 to May 2009, served as vice director of the photography department of the Beijing News Daily, in charge of 16 photojournalists, with the main responsibilities of coordinating the shooting arrangements of the newspaper's daily news pictures, culture and art columns, evaluating the news events of major events occurring domestically and internationally, and dispatching, or personally leading interviews to the most difficult and hard-to-break sites.

From June 2009 to April 2014, he was the director of photography of the photography department of the Beijing News Newspaper, in charge of 16 photojournalists and 6 photo editors, arranging photography and photo interviews for the daily news of the newspaper and major news events at home and abroad, responsible for the gatekeeping of the pictures on the sections of the daily newspaper, and conducting interviews and reports on the interviews of the major news events at home and abroad, independently or on behalf of the team.

In May 2014, he resigned from the position of director of photography and returned to the front line, serving as the chief reporter of the Beijing News in the photography department.

In August 2015, he was honored by the newspaper as the first Band-10 chief reporter since the founding of the Beijing News for his outstanding professional performance in journalism.

From May 2014 to May 2018, he was the chief reporter of the photography department of the Beijing News Newspaper, mainly carrying out major public opinion monitoring reports on environmental pollution, major disasters, poverty and education in rural China, and published dozens of in-depth video investigative reports, which contributed to the solution of many social problems.

From March 2018 to May 2021, he co-founded the "Outstanding Studio" with Liu Min, the chief reporter of the Beijing News, and dedicate himself to digging into the depth of poverty, environmental protection, and other social issues, disseminating them in the form of feature articles, group pictures, videos, or short documentaries, and conducting anthropological and sociological research on related issues. He also conducts anthropological and sociological research on related issues, with a view to presenting the complexity and discourse of related issues in the process of social development in words and images, and preserving precious historical materials for research. His representative works include "Pollution in the Tengger Desert", "Tianjin Explosion", " Cliff Village", etc. He won the Golden Image Award, the highest award for photography in China, the third Prize for General News of the World Press Photo Prize in 2016, and the China News Award for 3 consecutive years, Golden Lens Award of the Year in 2016, Outstanding Photographer of the Year of the Golden Lens for 2 times, the Best Environmental Journalist of China in 2015, and he was elected as one of the CCTV China's Top 10 Rule of Law Figures, 2017 Tencent Media Award Journalist of the Year, etc.

March 22, 2016, at the invitation of Hu Shuli, a famous Chinese journalist, the founder and the chief of Caixin Media, Chen Jie and other 6 famous Chinese photographers launched "Beijing Aurora Visual Culture Communication Co. The company specializes in the field of visual arts, and is engaged in the shooting of documentary photographs, the intake of major topics reflecting the current social issues and deep-seated signs of history in China, and the provision of diversified records and dissemination.

From 2018 to 2021, he is a visiting professor at the School of Design and Art of Communication University of Zhejiang, mainly instructing students in the field of how to play the role of public opinion monitoring through in-depth image investigation.

In 2023, he was appointed as a tutor for master's degree students in the School of Design and Art of Communication University of Zhejiang, mainly for the students recruited to carry out four years of creative practice guidance, the guidance content is the story excavation, the creation of documentaries and feature films.

On September 18, 2023, Chen Jie launched the "Yueer Pixel" project with the Yueer Public Welfare Foundation, a 5A-level foundation in China, with the aim of telling the life stories of different individuals through a vivid photo and a video compiled in the field. The aim of the project is to tell the life stories of different individuals through photos and videos, and to reflect the actual social dilemmas from the perspectives of rural revitalization, disaster relief, schooling, medical care, helping the poor, and compassionate care. Chen Jie, together with seven other renowned Chinese photographers, as the first core creators of the Yueer Pixel Project, the pixel is the smallest indestructible unit of an optical image, the name refers to record life, cities, and the environment, to bring social issues to the heart of more people, and connect people who have never met before, thus forming a synergy and looking forward to improving the current situation of the society.
